The visitor to Edinburgh can very easily spend all their time within the city itself, there is so much to see. But do try to find time to look around the nearby countryside which also has many spectacular views. Steeped in history the Lothians has many castles and historical sites and the eastern part is well known for its golf courses — Mary Queen of Scots played at nearby Musselburgh. These give a suggested itinerary and the historical sites on a reasonable short drive of up to 40 miles from Edinburgh. From here we chose to go off one suggested route to another to see places of interest to us. Having an interest in the Covenanters I was especially keen to see for myself the infamous Bass Rock which was used as a prison in for the most vociferous rather than dangerous Presbyterian ministers, including John Blackader who lies buried at North Berwick church. Prestonpans got its name from the salt pans there dating from the 12th century, but its monopoly on salt was ended by the Act of Union in which allowed salt to be brought in from England. It was the location of a great victory for Bonnie Prince Charlie in when the army of Sir John Cope was routed in minutes. In Port Seton can be found the 15th century Collegiate Church and Aberlady has some pretty cottages with a motor museum nearby at Myreton.

North Berwick Law may only be metres tall but it dominates the surrounding landscape, rising out of flat farmland beside the sea at North Berwick. It is a volcanic plug formed around million years ago. A couple of thousand years ago a fort was built on the Law, taking advantage of the fantastic defensive situation created by the steep sides of the hill. At several points on the Law there are flattish terraces, and these were used for occupation.
One wall enclosed an area of around 90 metres by metres at the top, the wall being approximately 15 metres below the summit. While the central part of this area is rocky and uneven, there is a flatter terrace around it, with fantastic views out over North Berwick and beyond to the River Forth. Further down there is a small terrace to the south west, overlooking the car park far below, and this was enclosed by a second wall.
A third wall surrounded the lower part of the Law, enclosing a wide terrace to the south and south-east upon which numerous circular huts would have stood. As well as being affected by gravity over the years, the fort has probably been disturbed by several developments connected to its use as a lookout post down the centuries.
